Fed cuts prompt 10 layoffs at MBPN

The Maine Public Broadcasting Network will lay off up to 10 workers and put its Maine-focused public affairs show, Maine Watch, on hiatus for the summer in response to federal and state funding cuts.

Most of the layoffs will come from the station's in-house video production department, according to a press release.

Those cuts aim to make up an expected $400,000 shortfall in the current fiscal year ending June 30. That projected shortfall anticipates a $260,000 drop in state funding, a $100,000 drop in federal funding and a $40,000 drop in philanthropic giving.

The station says the layoffs will not affect other programming and local television production, including its newly launched Maine Capitol Connection and its coverage of high school basketball.
