Feds charge Down East seafood co. with felony

Kip's Seafood Company in Cushing last week was indicted on federal felony charges for allegedly shipping 20,000 pounds of potentially harmful shellfish in 2003 to dealers in Philadelphia and New York.

Kip's Seafood Company and its owner, Kyle Crute Sr., were indicted on October 3 on two felony counts of conspiring to transport and sell interstate commerce shellfish as well as shipping and selling it, according to the Associated Press.

The indictment says Kip's Seafood shipped $56,000 worth of clams and mussels after its interstate license was suspended because water used to wash the seafood at its plant was dirty, the AP said. Federal investigators say Kip's obtained roughly 800 interstate certification tags ˆ– required by law so authorities can track shipments to their source ˆ– from Young's Shellfish Co. in Belfast to deceive law enforcement, the AP reported. When reached by the AP, Crute would not comment on the charges.

If convicted, Crute could face 15 years in prison. Investigators said Kip's Seafood did eventually install an advanced water purification system and had its interstate shipping license restored.
