PUC to investigate gas leaks

The state Public Utilities Commission yesterday launched an investigation of Northern Utilities' safety practices, following a recent series of gas leaks in Southern Maine.

The PUC issued the investigation in response to three gas leaks -- one in Cape Elizabeth on Monday, another in South Portland on October 1 and another in Saco in April. The leaks prompted the evacuation of some residents and caused a home in South Portland to explode, the PUC said yesterday in a press release.

The PUC is looking into how the utility evacuates areas with third-party contractors, how it deals with municipal road projects that involve paving over gas lines and how it notifies residents if they have live gas lines running through their basements.

The PUC expects to complete its investigation in two weeks.
