Feds probe ME's conservation commish

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating an allegation that Maine's conservation commissioner used his personal plane to help moose hunters last fall, violating a law that prohibits the use of aircraft as part of a hunt.

Department of Conservation Commissioner Patrick McGowan denies the allegation, arguing that he took friends on a fall foliage flight on Sunday, Sept. 23, in northern Maine, the Morning Sentinel in Waterville reported. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife already has found McGowan committed no wrongdoing following two investigations of the allegations, IF&W spokeswoman Deborah Turcotte told the paper.

McGowan said the allegation was brought forward by a "disgruntled former (state) employee."
