Hannaford partakes in medical tourism

Employees at Hannaford Bros., based in Scarborough, can now get hip and knee replacement surgery at a hospital in Singapore.

In an effort to save on health care costs, the grocery chain in January added the benefit to its medical insurance plan, which is administered by Aetna, according to the Maine Sunday Telegram. As the cost of medical care in the United States rises, more U.S. residents are seeking medical care abroad, the paper said.

The company's 27,000 workers, 7,000 of whom are in Maine, can get the surgery at Singapore's National University Hospital, where the procedure costs $10,000 to $15,000, compared to as much as $60,000 in the United States, the paper reported.

A "handful" of employees are considering the offer, Peter Hayes, Hannaford's benefits plan manager, told the paper.
