The U.S. Department of Labor today said it is providing roughly $2.5 million for workers laid off from two companies earlier this year in Wells, Portland and South Portland.
The largest grant is $2.1 million to assist the roughly 300 workers laid off in March at R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co.'s catalog and direct-marketing printing plant in Wells. Of the total amount, $850,000 will be released first, with additional funding provided as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Labor.
The smaller grant of $430,000 is to assist approximately 65 workers affected by the May layoffs at two locations of the Standard Insurance Co. in Portland and South Portland.
These National Emergency Grants, which will be operated by Coastal Counties Workforce Inc., will provide affected workers with access to an array of dislocated worker services, from individual career counseling to occupational skills training. The funds were made available under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
