The Land Use Regulation Commission yesterday kicked off a series of hearings to solicit public feedback on proposed changes to the comprehensive land use plan that guide its decisions concerning development in the state's Unorganized Territory.
At yesterday's meeting in Augusta, many attendees urged the seven-member panel to balance development and preservation in the state's 10 million acres of unorganized territories, according to the Kennebec Journal. Just last Wednesday, the commission unanimously approved Plum Creek Timber Co.'s plan for two resorts, more than 2,000 housing units and nearly 400,000 acres of conserved land near Moosehead Lake, the largest development in the state's history.
Revisions to the comprehensive plan began in 2005. After the draft copy is finalized, it will go to the Legislature's Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee, and then on to Gov. John Baldacci, the paper reported. The commission is scheduled to hold a hearing today in Bangor and in Presque Isle on Wednesday.
