Feds urge collaboration in railroad save

A federal transportation official urged the creation of a partnership among the federal and state governments, and private interests, as the best way to save 241 miles of rail line expected to be abandoned by the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway Co.

Joseph C. Szabo, administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration, told a group of northern Maine manufacturers that a collaboration must exist to access federal dollars that could help preserve the rail service, according to the Bangor Daily News. The stretch of rail is considered essential to the forest products industry.

The Hermon-based rail company announced this winter it would abandon the unprofitable line, citing a 40% drop in business.

A bond package that contains $17 million to buy the threatened rail line is expected to come before lawmakers Monday.
