Fire destroys MDI restaurant

A fire destroyed The Moorings waterfront restaurant in the Southwest Harbor village of Manset late Monday morning.

Fire Chief Sam Chisholm told the Bangor Daily News the fire started shortly after noon and appears to have started in or near an electrical room off the kitchen, spreading into the ceiling and roof. Nobody was injured and the blaze did not spread to neighborhood buildings. An estimated dollar amount of damage was not available, and the State Fire Marshal's Office is expected to investigate to determine the cause of the blaze.

Restaurant owner Heath Higgins said the 60-year-old building was insured but did not specify his immediate plans for the restaurant. He told the paper he plans to help his nine employees find other jobs, the majority of whom had come from out of state to work at the seasonal restaurant a few weeks ago.
