A fire yesterday gutted the former Jordan's Meat plant in Portland, but shouldn't affect developers' plans to turn the site into a hotel.
No one was injured in the fast-moving fire at the vacant building, which is in the process of being demolished, at the corner of Fore Street and Franklin Arterial, according to the Portland Press Herald. Crews yesterday were working to remove asbestos from the building, but were outside on a lunch break when it started. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it does not appear to be suspicious.
Old Port Hospitality LLC bought the 1.74-acre site on Feb. 1 and recently received approval from the Portland Planning Board for a $15 million hotel, restaurant and condominium complex. Gregory Kirsch, one of the principals of the company, said the building was not insured but "has no value," and that the fire would not disrupt the company's plans to begin site work later this month. Old Port Hospitality still plans to open the hotel by Memorial Day 2011.
