A fire yesterday destroyed a wood products manufacturing plant in Norway, while a separate blaze damaged a proposed slaughterhouse in Auburn.
An early morning fire caused by an electrical malfunction gutted the Oxford Pine Products yesterday, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. Owner Timothy Paul said the building and contents were a total loss and not insured. The company, founded in 1977, makes a variety of wood products including bookcases and dressers. It was unclear how many people it employed.
In related news, a fire damaged an Auburn building just hours after city councilors voted to amend zoning to allow slaughterhouse operations in the area, according to the Sun Journal. Councilors voted 4-2 to allow slaughterhouses to operate in the city's Agriculture and Resource Protection Zone, allowing developer Craig Linke to apply for a special-use permit to operate a slaughterhouse at the property. The State Fire Marshal's Office said the fire was arson, and that the building will be usable following repairs. Linke told the paper he plans to open Mainestock on the 21.5-acre parcel and employ 15 people.
