CUs offer loans for Thibeault customers

Customers impacted by the closure of Brunswick-based oil company Thibeault Energy can now obtain interest-free loans from five area credit unions.

The credit unions -- Atlantic Regional Federal Credit Union, Down East Credit Union, Five County Credit Union, Lisbon Community Federal Credit Union and Midcoast Federal Credit Union -- will offer no-interest loans of as much as $2,000 to the 400 people who pre-paid for oil through Thibeault Energy but did not receive deliveries, according to MaineToday Media. At a press conference yesterday, Gov. Paul LePage announced the loans, the result of meetings among the administration, state legislators and representatives from the Finance Authority of Maine, the state attorney general's office, MaineHousing and others. People will have one year to pay back the loans, and will need to show proof that they lost money due to Thibeault's closing. MaineHousing also obtained additional federal money through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program for the 40 affected customers who receive assistance through the program.

Thibeault Energy closed last month after saying it was attempting to find additional working capital.
