The city of Auburn is the first community in the state officially slated for the opening of a Krispy Kreme franchise by the year’s end, according to the Associated Press.
News about Krispy Kreme expanding into Maine and New Hampshire broke in February, with franchisee Cort Mendez saying that a development deal had been signed to open four locations in New Hampshire and three in Maine. Mendez owns NH Glazed LLC and was awarded the rights to expand the doughnut chain into Maine and New Hampshire
Krispy Kreme, which was founded in 1937, is one of the two biggest national doughnut chains in a $13 billion industry, according to franchisechatter.com.
In Maine, doughnuts have become a popular niche, with the opening or expansion of businesses such as Holy Donut in Portland, Dirty Dozen Donuts in Sanford, Tony's Donuts in Portland and Frosty's Donuts in Brunswick, Gardiner, Bath and Freeport.
