First Wind is in the advanced development stage for a wind farm in Rumford.
Newton, Mass.-based First Wind, which operates the wind farms in Mars Hill and on Stetson Mountain, has proposed another project on Rumford's Black Mountain, a local skiing destination. The company wants to build a 16-turbine project on the mountain that could generate 40 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 17,000 homes, according to the Sun Journal. The company has set up towers to gauge wind on the back side of the mountain and wants to install turbines in an area free of ski trails and snow tubing activity. First Wind still needs to complete studies of migratory bird routes and other environmental factors as mandated by the state Department of Environmental Protection, the paper reported.
The company owns and operates the 42-megawatt Mars Hill wind farm in Aroostook County and wind projects in the Washington County town of Danforth. It also is pursuing a 60-megawatt wind farm near Lincoln in Penobscot County and a 55.5-megawatt project in the Aroostook County town of Oakfield.
Is this power going out of state? I feel we are being exploited by our neighbors to the south. First it was our homes now it is our mountains. I bet we would let them build a dam, especially if the power was going out of state.
