First Wind sells out power from Hancock project

The Boston-based First Wind has reached an agreement to sell nearly three-fourths of the power from its planned 17-turbine Hancock Wind project, near Ellsworth.

Seventeen Massachusetts municipalities have agreed to a 25-year fixed-price contract through the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Co., according to a press release. The company reached an agreement last week with the municipal utility of Burlington, Vt., to sell the remaining 25% of the power from the wind farm.

The announcement of the deal comes after Maine's Board of Environmental Protection rejected two appeals seeking to invalidate state approval of the $110 million project. The planned 51 megawatt Hancock Wind project would abut the 19-turbine Bull Hill Wind project built last year.
