Fish exchange lands funding

The Portland Fish Pier, which houses the struggling Portland Fish Exchange, recently received $500,000 in funding from a collection of state, local and economic development agencies.

Coastal Enterprises Inc. in Wiscasset and the Maine Department of Transportation partnered to give the funding to the Fish Pier, which includes space for fish processing, fuel and ice vendors, vessel repair shops, office space and berths for fishing vessels. CEI President Ron Phillips said in a press release that the facility is a "staple" for Maine's groundfish industry. "We feel that continuing to maintain and operate this facility is essential in order for Maine to continue to have a groundfish fleet."

The release noted that stricter federal and state regulations have resulted in a decrease of groundfish landings, which directly impacted the Portland Fish Pier and the Fish Exchange. Tom Valleau, chairman of the Portland Fish Pier Authority, said the funding will "help keep the Fish Pier in the business of supporting Maine's groundfish industry through difficult times."
