Fishman Realty founder Alan Fishman dies

Alan Mark Fishman, a longtime fixture in the Portland real estate world and founder of Fishman Realty Group, died Aug. 30 at the age of 69.

Fishman, a Boston native, began his real estate career in Massachusetts in Stop N'Shop's real estate division, according to his obituary. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Maine to join the family business, Eastland Shoe, but returned to real estate a few years later, working with southern Maine commercial development company J.B. Brown & Sons. In the early 1980s, he founded Atbro Corp., a company that was involved in the development of what is now known as 1 and 2 Portland Square. He purchased Property Management Services, a full-service property management, leasing and maintenance company, which was then expanded to offer brokerage services in 1987 and renamed Fishman Realty Group.

Fishman initiated several industry associations during his more than 40 years in real estate. He was a founding member of the Maine Commercial Association of Realtors, as well as a founding member and past board member of the Maine Real Estate and Development Association. Most recently, he served as a volunteer on MEREDA's conference committee, which handles its educational seminars and annual forecasting conference in January.

"He was very happy to be involved, and always came with a smile on his face," says Shelly Clark, MEREDA's business and operations manager. "He always had great insights to bring to the conversation, and was a great guy. We will miss him greatly."

Fishman also volunteered his time to the Portland Museum of Art, Cedars Nursing Care Center, Temple Beth El the Etz Chaim Synagogue, and was involved with Rotary, the chamber of commerce and the Business Network International. Fishman lived in Kennebunk.
