A long-planned hotel at Portland’s Thompson’s Point is under construction and is expected to open next year.
Chris Thompson of Forefront Development confirmed that the project is underway for a five-story, 148-room Marriott property, projected to open in 2026. The project has been on the drawing board since the city of Portland approved the master plan for Thompson’s Point in 2014.
The new hotel will be situated on Thompson’s Point Road, next to the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine and connected to the 34,000-square-foot Brick South event space.
The site is within walking distance of the Portland Transportation Center, Amtrak Downeaster rail line and Concord bus terminal.
The hotel will have a restaurant, bar and roof terrace, as well as guest amenities like a fitness center and indoor pool.
Procon Inc., which is based in Manchester, N.H., is handling construction of the hotel. The company has built more than 20 hotels in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New Jersey, along with the West Street Hotel in Bar Harbor.
The next development planned for Thompson’s Point is a six-story, 255-unit apartment building. A proposal for the project was presented for initial review to the Portland Planning Board at a workshop Jan. 14, with a timeline targeting ground breaking by the end of this year.
