Food Banks asking for speedy relief

Three major foods bank in northern New England, including Maine's Good Shepherd Food Bank, are pressing their state senators to quickly pass the Farm Bill, which will provide nearly $5 million in new food assistance next year to Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire.

According to a press release from Vermont Foodbank, food banks around the country are struggling to provide food as federal support has declined in recent years. In Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, U.S. Department of Agriculture commodity donations fell to a five year low this year, and at the same time more people are requesting food.

The Farm Bill has stalled in the Senate, but food banks say assistance is needed now because New Englanders are struggling with rising fuel and food costs. The bill, if passed, will provide the region with $30 million in food assistance over the next five years.
