Food businesses revitalize East Bayside in Portland
The burgeoning food economy and further development plans in East Bayside, a Portland neighborhood, will be celebrated during an event called “Phoenix Fare” on Thursday that will feature free lectures, films, book discussions and tours along the neighborhood streets.
As reported in The Forecaster, East Bayside is the locale of a growing number of small food businesses, including Coffee By Design, Urban Farm Fermentory and Rising Tide Brewing Co.
But much of the neighborhood was built on contaminated land. Earlier this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $200,000 Brownfields Area-Wide Planning Grant to the Greater Portland Council of Governments to determine the amount of contaminated soil and create a development plan for the neighborhood.
As part of Phoenix Fare, an EPA mobile lab will visit the Boyd Street Urban Farm in Kennedy Park to provide free screenings for lead content in local soil. Members of the city-based Cultivating Community will provide tips for lead-safe gardening. Soil sample bags and instructions are already available near the center staircase at Portland City Hall, 389 Congress St., and at the Portland Public Library, 5 Monument Square.
Phoenix Fare is just the start of the process, City Hall spokeswoman Jessica Grondin told The Forecaster. Public forums and meetings will lead to the creation of action teams to develop recommendations that will ultimately be presented to the City Council.
