Food & Wine names Biddeford among 4 'small cities with impressive food scenes'

As new development makes Biddeford a hotspot for an influx of residents and businesses, the city's eateries are now gaining national attention.

Earlier this year, Ben Jackson and Bowman Brown, chefs respectively at Magnus on Water and Elda, were finalists for James Beard Foundation awards.

Now all of Biddeford has been singled out by Food & Wine magazine as one of four small cities in U.S. with “impressive food scenes worth checking out.”

The prestigious gourmet publication this week released its inaugural list of the “next great food cities: the seven most exciting big cities, plus four smaller towns with populations less than 60,000 that have big food scenes.”

Calling Biddeford Portland’s “quiet older sister with great taste,” the write-up cites Magnus on Water, Night Moves Bread, Jackrabbit Café, Elda, Palace Diner, Rabelais and Lorne Wine, and encourages visitors to check into the new Lincoln Hotel.

The four small cities — which also included Bozeman, Mont., Charlottesville, Va., and Greenville, S.C. — were cited as “punching well above their weight with their vibrant food and drink scenes.”

The company also named seven larger cities — Boise, Idaho; Charlotte, N.C.; Cincinnati; Indianapolis; Jersey City, N.J.; Omaha, Neb.; and Tucson, Ariz.— as “most exciting up-and-coming” food destinations.

The lists come at a time when the culinary landscape in cities big and small around the country “has matured exponentially in the past two decades,” the write-up said.

Food & Wine continued, “The immense challenges of the last two years in particular have seen many chefs, restaurateurs, and makers leave bigger urban centers and return to their smaller home cities. This returning talent, plus a new generation of entrepreneurs, are spurring a burst of creativity, innovation and deliciousness in under-the-radar destinations all over the country.

Food & Wine has a circulation of over 900,000 and is part of Dotdash Meredith, a media company headquartered in New York City.
