Foreign labor in Maine woods under scrutiny

A new state task force will investigate whether logging companies in northern Maine are bending the rules when it comes to Canadian labor.

The Maine Department of Labor will lead the task force, which will include staff from the Attorney General's office, the Department of Conservation, Maine Revenue Service and the Department of Public Safety. The task force will seek to ensure logging companies are in compliance with Maine equipment ownership laws and the federal foreign labor certification process, designed to make sure Maine workers have an adequate opportunity to apply for job openings.

"There are numerous allegations and rumors about inappropriate activity concerning Canadian labor in Maine's woods," Gov. John E. Baldacci said in a statement. "We are putting the resources on the ground to look into the situation, determine if there are violations and take necessary action if any are confirmed."
