Former ACS call center laying off 181

A call center in Lewiston owned by Xerox is planning to lay off nearly 200 people this summer, less than a year after expanding by about that many people.

The former Affiliated Computer Services call center will lay off 121 people July 18 and another 60 workers by July 31, according to the Sun Journal. Affected employees were notified Friday. The layoffs affect workers handling calls directed to Allstate or Capitol One; a company spokesman said it wasn't economically feasible to retain those jobs.

Xerox in 2009 acquired ACS in a transaction worth $6.4 billion. Last August, the company announced an expansion of its Lewiston center, hiring 200 call center agents and supervisors. Xerox spokesman Kevin Lightfoot said infrastructure changes beginning in January affected the center's operations. Last August, the company had 417 employees before hiring another 200.
