Former growth council bookkeeper pleads guilty to embezzlement

A former bookkeeper for the Central Maine Growth Council in Waterville has admitted to embezzling almost $28,000 from the nonprofit dedicated to economic development in the region.

Holly A. Strout, 36, on Tuesday pleaded guilty to the embezzling charge in Kennebec County Superior Court, according to the Kennebec Journal. Strout worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for the growth council for less than a year, writing 37 unauthorized checks to herself between August 2007 and July 2008.

If Strout pays back the full amount embezzled, she would face three years in jail, with all but 30 days suspended, and two years probation, according to the newspaper.
