Toby McGrath, former deputy chief of staff for Sen. Angus King, has been named managing director of Drummond Woodsum’s strategic consulting business.
Recognized as a “rising star” by Campaigns & Elections magazine in 2010, McGrath joined the law firm this summer as a non-lawyer consultant to lead its Government Relations and Campaigns practice. His previous experience includes stints serving as chief of staff to the Maine Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Maine House Majority Leader and a 2009 appointment by President Barack Obama as the assistant administrator for field operations at the U.S. Small Business Administration, where his oversight of SBA activities across the country gave him a national perspective on the issues facing small business.
Drummond Woodsum Strategic Consulting is a wholly owned subsidiary of the law firm, according to a Jan. 1 press release announcing McGrath’s appointment. Services include government affairs, organizational development, grassroots organizing and campaigns.
“Toby’s reputation precedes him. He brings 15 years of experience in the legislative and electoral process to assist our clients to achieve their legislative, organizational, public policy and electoral goals,” Benjamin E. Marcus, Drummond Woodsum’s managing director, said in the release.
“Years of working both the public and private sector helped me realize that organizations, particularly those that are moving into or expanding within Northern New England, need more than what a traditional law firm can provide,” McGrath said in the release.
Founded in 2014, Drummond Woodsum Strategic Consulting is staffed by professionals with experience in the legislative and electoral process as well as organizational and institutional policy change. The law firm, which marked its 50th anniversary in 2015, has more than 60 attorneys practicing from offices in Portland and Portsmouth and Manchester, N.H.
