Nova Star Cruises, the company that operated the ferry service between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, during the 2014 and 2015 seasons has filed for bankruptcy protection in Canada.
The Bangor Daily News reports that as part of its bankruptcy filing, the company still owes the city of Portland $62,000 and an additional $362,000 to various companies across the state.
Nova Star’s largest Maine-based debt is to the Portland-based marine pilot and operation service, Portland Pilots Inc., which is owed approximately $157,300 for its services escorting the ferry through Portland harbor.
According to bankruptcy documents, Nova Star has claimed $12 million in debt and $112,000 in assets.
