American Family Care, a national urgent care and occupational medicine provider, will open a location at at 230 Waterman Drive in South Portland’s Knightville neighborhood.
The center, as well as a Starbucks, will move into a 5,200-square-foot building that has been empty since Wendy’s closed last summer. It will take up 3,150 square feet of the building. The building is free-standing, but part of the Mill Creek Shopping Center, and is at the corner of Waterman and Market streets. It was marketed by The Urbanek Group.
AFC, which will open this spring, will be the first in a network of centers to come to Maine, the company said in a news release. Starbucks is expected to open in August.
The center will be owned and operated by local residents Dr. Andre Couture and Lee Moehlenkamp. Couture is is certified in emergency medicine and will be medical director. Moehlenkamp will be managing director.
“I’m excited to return to the community where I grew up to provide urgent care to families who live and work nearby,” Couture said in a news release. “We care deeply about the keeping the community healthy and look forward to becoming a trusted member.”
AFC South Portland will be the second center operated by Moehlenkamp. The first opened seven years ago in Braintree, Mass., and is one of the top five best-performing centers in the national AFC network, the company said.
“Our patients will be able to count on us to consistently deliver exceptional medical care in a welcoming and friendly environment while always being respectful of their time and hard-earned money.” Moehlenkamp said.
American Family Care South Portland will provide a comprehensive suite of medical services as an alternative to visiting a hospital emergency room. It will have on-site X-ray and laboratories, and will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Nationwide, American Family Care has 200 clinics and 600 in-network physicians and cares for 3 million patients a year.
