The Portland-based John T. Gorman Foundation is giving $960,650 to 62 nonprofit organizations in every Maine county as part of its effort to support struggling communities.
Announced on Wednesday, the foundation’s new round of grants will support nonprofits that provide low-income families with food, clothing, heating assistance, transportation, counseling and other kinds of services. The grant amounts range from $2,500 to $23,000.
Some of the grant recipients include the Maine Sea Coast Mission, which provides shelter, food and clothing assistance for families in Hancock and Washington counties; Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area, which provides direct care and bereavement services for hospice patients diagnosed with cancer in Kennebec County; and the Maine Farmland Trust, which provides funds for the Food for Seniors programs in Kennebec and Waldo counties.
“The social safety net in our state is fraying due to cuts in federal and state funding," Tony Cipollone, the foundation’s president and CEO, said in a prepared statement. "Our hope is that these grants will benefit the thousands of Maine residents who are struggling in a tough economy."
