Four months in, exports to Iceland break 2013 record

The value of Maine’s exports to Iceland reached $2.02 million for the first quarter in 2014, already breaking last year’s $1.95 million record and forecasting a banner year for exports.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the January-April report comes in just as Gov. Paul LePage and a trade delegation are visiting Iceland this week. The delegation, organized by the Maine International Trade Center, includes representatives from Bar Harbor Foods in Whiting, Maine Grains in Skowhegan and other industries.

The $2.02 million tally signals that the value of exports to Iceland for all of 2014 is likely to far exceed last year’s $1.95 million. In 2012 and 2011, the total value of exports to Iceland was $220,000 and $420,000, respectively. The newspaper noted that Maine’s most exported item for the first quarter is newsprint, followed by vehicles and tissue products.
