Freeport is quickly becoming a hub for craft beer lovers.

With Maine Beer Co., Gritty McDuff's Brew Pub and Stars & Stripes Brewing Co. already in place on the U.S. Route 1 corridor and Brickyard Hollow downtown, there will be two newcomers.

The latest news is a Yarmouth restaurateur, Christian "Nighthawk" Noe, will join Mast Landing Brewing Co. in its planned brew pub in the Freeport Crossings shopping center (near Shaw's).

In South Freeport, two Portland companies will team up on a restaurant-brewery in the former El Jefe/Conundrum location, as Meredith Goad reported last month in the Portland Press Herald. The partners are Goodfire Brewing, which is based in East Bayside, and Mr. Tuna, which has popular food trucks and a site at the Public Market in downtown Portland. They're shooting for a fall opening, the newspaper reported.

Freeport's growing craft beer cluster has developed alongside Maine Beer Co., which has expanded its space and continues to draw big crowds, especially on the days when it releases special edition brews. At least in Maine, the cluster of brewpubs is rivaled only by neighborhoods in Portland.

Mast Landing's new partnership

Mast Landing Brewing, which launched in 2015 with a tasting room in Westbrook, announced Wednesday that the restaurant arm of its Freeport site, Nighthawk's Kitchen, will be managed by Noe, who moved to Yarmouth last year from New York. He had a similar

partnership in Long Island City, N.Y., with Rockaway Brewing. Noe also has an extensive background catering for TV shows, for Chef Bobby Flay and Martha Stewart, and on movie sets, for the director Spike Lee and actor Seth Rogen, among others.

The 11,000-square-foot brewery and tasting room will feature American and international comfort foods. It will open later this month.

“It’s such a joy to be opening my restaurant within a world-class brewery and to utilize the freshest of local Maine ingredients for recipes that are meant to complement Mast Landing Brewing’s all-star lineup of craft brews. I am excited to bring my classic crowd favorite recipes to Freeport. My collaboration with the Mast Landing team has been so enjoyable and we’re so excited to welcome all the fantastic food lovers out there," Noe said in a news release.

Ian Dorsey, president and CEO of Mast Landing, said Noe brings a "combination of professionalism and creativity."

“Working with Christian has already been a great source of inspiration for the Mast Landing team,” Dorsey said.

The site will include a 4,000-square-foot event space upstairs.

Freeport Crossing is owned by Massachusetts-based WS Development. The brewpub site will be in the former Carter's children's clothing store, though it had been vacant for some time. It is about a mile south of L.L.Bean and downtown Freeport, but right off Route 1 and Exit 20 of I-295. It is less than a mile north of Maine Beer.

“With Nighthawk’s Kitchen, we found a culinary partner and operator that mirrors Mast Landing Brewing Co.'s creativity and aspiration for developing an exciting new craft beer and food experience for guests. We are beyond excited to see these two businesses come together to combine their talents and represent the very best of what they do. We look forward to building upon this momentum with more like-minded businesses to serve Freeport and the surrounding communities,” said Nick Margitza, director of leasing at WS Development.
