Freeport to consider plastic bag ban

The Freeport Town Council is expected to make a decision on Tuesday whether or not to move forward with a proposal to ban plastic bags.

The Portland Press Herald reported that more research and legwork is expected if the town council decides to proceed. The ban was proposed last year by two Freeport residents seeking to raise awareness about the toxic substances contained within plastic bags. The ban is being mulled a day before the city of Portland begins imposing a 5-cent fee on every paper or plastic bag that a shopper receives at a grocery store and other locations.

An informal survey conducted by the town’s ordinance committee found that 70% of nearly 800 respondents would support a plastic bag ban. A separate survey by the Freeport Chamber of Commerce found that 80% of business owner respondents do not use plastic bags, while only 51% said they would support a ban.
