Icy weather put a damper on business activity in Maine on Friday.
Across the state, nonprofits, schools and many businesses were closed as freezing rain fell on top of several inches of snow received Thursday.
Widespread closings were reported on WGME’s website. Colleges, universities and community colleges closed their doors Friday. Public schools were closed.
The Dempsey Center’s Lewiston and South Portland sites weren't in operation for the day.
All state government offices, as well as a number of municipal offices and libraries, were closed. So were Social Security Administration offices in Portland and Augusta.
Many banks across the state were closed or opened on a delayed schedule. The Driving School’s more than a dozen locations were closed.
But while closings were widespread, gas stations, grocery stores, convenience stores and coffee shops were open for the most part.
Mail delivery and UPS and FedEx deliveries appeared to go ahead, as did food deliveries, if slowed by street conditions.
Would Maine be open to a new mode of transportation which runs 24/7/365 in any weather (except extreme winds)? This is a hard state to innovate but given the snow days and large numbers of accidents and deaths, isn't it time? https://www.facebook.com/MagLev-Maine-2300607583360326/
