Friday Food Insider: Allagash Brewing will host 'Camp Allagash' this summer

It's Friday, an August weekend is almost here, and you know what that means — it's time for summer camp.

Allagash Brewing Co., Maine's largest beer maker, will soon transform its brewery at 50 Industrial Way in Portland into “Camp Allagash.”

From Sunday through Aug. 17, the brewer will invite visitors to channel their inner camper with activities ranging from tie-dying and friendship bracelet-making to “fishing,” tiny axe throwing, a Center for Wildlife animal visit, a rock-paper-scissors tournament and more.

Most of the programming will be free for visitors to the tasting room, but some special events will be ticketed.

"It came from a collective internal realization that so many of us have fond memories of summer camp here in Maine, and we wanted to recreate a little slice of that experience here at the brewery," said Emily Wallace, Allagash's hospitality director.

"The nugget of the idea actually came from an event we hosted with the Ecology School, so they deserve some credit here too.

"We think Camp Allagash is a great way to bring guests together and make the most of the summer before the season ends, all with a bit of nostalgia to boot, as we’re hosting activities and games that many on our team grew up playing."

Wallace told Mainebiz that the brewery expects around 3,000 visitors per week in August and hopes Camp Allagash will add to that number.

This will be the brewery's first such event, but Allagash hopes to hold more fun, family-friendly festivities like this in the future.

"We’re excited to continue to bring fun programming to the brewery and make Allagash’s home a Portland destination, where we welcome people to have a great time with their friends and families," said Wallace.
