FTC approves Idexx fairness pact

The Federal Trade Commission granted final approval to a consent agreement from Westbrook-based Idexx Laboratories Inc., resolving a multi-year investigation into complaints of unfair competition against the company.

Idexx Chairman and CEO Jonathan Ayers said in a press release that the company's distribution practices did not violate antitrust laws. The FTC began investigating Idexx in early 2010, looking into exclusive distribution agreements the company had with three veterinary supply companies.

Those three national distributors — MWI Veterinary Supply Inc., Butler Schein Animal Health and Webster Veterinary — agreed to carry Idexx products exclusively.

In April, the company announced plans to stop an exclusive distribution agreement with one of those companies as a result of negotiations with FTC officials.
