ORPC makes Fast Co. innovators list

The Portland-based Ocean Renewable Power Co., which made history late last year when its 176,000-pound tidal-power generator in Cobscook Bay started sending power to the grid, has been named to Fast Company magazine's list of the top 10 innovative energy companies.

The ranking was based on the company's pioneering tidal-energy project near Eastport, which was the first tidal project to generate power to the grid through a 20-year power purchasing agreement approved by the Maine Public Utilities Commission with Bangor Hydro Electric, Central Maine Power and Maine Public Service.

This year, the company plans to refine a smaller turbine that will generate power from river currents.
