A nearly $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor is slated to help workers affected by the closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station.
The National Emergency Grant will continue to fund re-employment assistance performed by the Maine DOL for some of the 300 workers originally targeted for aid, as well as service for another 400, according to a press release from the federal DOL. The grant is a follow-up to $2 million awarded in February 2008, and will help the DOL provide job placement services and skills training.
Meanwhile, the federal agency also announced that workers in South Portland are now eligible to receive Trade Adjustment Assistance funds. Workers at National Semiconductor Corp., Interface and Hi-Rel Design Centers, including on-site leased workers from staffing firm Manpower, laid off between May 2008 and February 2010 can now apply for TAA benefits, including re-employment services and job search allowances. The number of eligible workers was not announced, but is included in a total of 2,700 workers in nine states who became eligible.
