Lobster catch high, but value drops

Though lobstermen hauled in a record 75.6 million pounds in 2009, the value of their catch dropped $23 million compared with 2008.

According to preliminary figures released yesterday by the Maine Department of Marine Resources, the catch for 2009 rose 5.9 million pounds over 2008 and beat out the highest recorded volume for landings, which was 75.3 million pounds in 2006, according to the Bangor Daily News. However, the value of the catch slipped from $244.2 million last year to $221.6 million. The record value for lobster landings was $318 million in 2005.
