Gambling eyed to close budget gap

A legislative committee is pushing to expand gambling in Maine to help address the state's $438 million budget shortfall.

The Legal and Veterans' Affairs Committee, which oversees gambling in the state, has suggested, among other options, allowing Hollywood Slots in Bangor to add table games and expanding the state lottery to include the multi-state mega millions game, according to Capitol News Service.

The committee also voted unanimously to reject a proposal to eliminate the Gambling Control Board's executive director position, saying the move would undermine oversight. The panel instead suggested that the board be moved under the state finance department.
