Visitors from Massachusetts and New York accounted for 40% of Maine's overnight visitors in 2008, according to new data presented at a statewide tourism industry event.
Overnight visitors to Maine that year spent $5.8 billion, compared to $1.7 billion by daytime visitors, according to research conducted for the state by private contractor Davidson-Peterson Associates, the Kennebec Journal reported. The information was presented in Waterville Thursday, marking the final stop of the Maine Office of Tourism's three-month road show event.
The Kennebec and Moose River Valleys region -- which includes Augusta, Waterville, The Forks and Jackman -- ranks second-to-last in visitor numbers, behind Aroostook County, the paper reported. The number of tourists visiting the state has fallen by 2.4% to 5% over the past couple years, while other New England states have seen decreases of up to 16%.
