Gas prices see midsummer surge

A national surge in gas prices has hit Maine particularly hard, boosting the per gallon price 16 cents. Nationwide, gas prices increased an average 12 cents per gallon, according to price monitoring website MaineGasPrices.com.

The Associated Press reported the in-state average of $3.69 is 17 cents higher than one year ago and 13 cents higher than one month ago. The price is also 7 cents above the national average.

An analyst from the price-monitoring website told the AP that gas prices are up because of political unrest in Egypt and declines in crude oil inventories.
