Gates promises work for BIW

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Bath Iron Works would have plenty of work for years to come during his tour of the shipyard on Friday, according to the Times Record.

Gates, the first defense secretary to make an official visit to BIW since the 1950s, said his new budget calls for all three of the Navy's next-generation DDG-1000 destroyers to be built at BIW, the paper said. Previous proposals had the work split between BIW and Northrop Grumman's Ingalls shipyard in Mississippi. BIW would also have opportunities to continue building the DDG-51, Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

While at BIW, Gates attended a pre-commissioning ceremony for the U.S.S. Wayne E. Meyer.
