The Maine Turnpike Authority and Maine Department of Transportation have launched a new campaign touting Go Maine, their free, statewide, commuter assistance program that connects drivers with potential riders looking to carpool for their daily commute to work.
In addition to an advertising campaign and social media outreach highlighting the ecological benefits of carpooling, the two agencies are promoting the program’s financial reward system. Go Maine’s incentive program entices carpool participants, public transportation users and commuters who bike or walk to work with reward points that add up to money-saving offers from businesses, stores and restaurants both locally and nationwide.
Carpoolers can also qualify for the program’s “emergency ride home benefit,” a free taxi or rental car ride home in case of illness or a family crisis.
“With many of the same traffic reduction and clean air goals in mind, we also have a program to reward people who commute using public transportation or who commute by bicycle or by foot,” Rebecca Grover, MTA’s Go Maine coordinator, said in a prepared statement. “They simply register at Go Maine, record their travel details, and the system tallies their reward points automatically.”
According to Grover, Go Maine has saved commuters nearly $700,000 and is responsible for more than 1,250,000 undriven miles since an upgrade last fall.
