Gorham co. pursues biorefinery

A company in Gorham is applying for a federal grant to help pay for a multi-million dollar demonstration project that would turn sawdust from Maine's paper mills into an inexpensive alternative to heating oil.

Biofine Technology LLC is seeking a $50 million federal energy grant to offset the cost of building a $113 million plant in Gorham to demonstrate the technology, according to the Portland Press Herald. The demonstration plant would be able to turn 50 tons of sawdust a day into 1.2 million gallons of fuel a year and would create an estimated 125 jobs, the paper reported. The company wants to prove that the technology is viable enough to build commercial plants next to paper mills to help the mills limit their reliance on oil. The company finds out in December if it received the grant, according to the paper.

Old Town Fuel and Fiber has been pursuing a second biorefinery project at the former Georgia-Pacific paper mill in Old Town. That company is negotiating a $30 million federal energy grant to help pay for a similar demonstration project, the Press Herald reported.
