Proponents of building a 15-acre concert complex in western Maine are seeking state grant money to make the $3.5 million project a reality.
Linda Walbridge, director of the Western Maine Economic Development Council, told the Sun Journal that Live Nation, a worldwide concert promoter, and the Oxford Agricultural Society want to build a theater complex capable of holding 20,000 concertgoers near the Oxford fairgrounds. Last week selectmen voted to consider sponsoring the group's application for a community development block grant, which could total $500,000, according to Walbridge.
Backers hope to build the venue to attract A-list musical acts to the state and stimulate western Maine's economy. The plan has already received the blessing of the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce, several businesses and the support of Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe and U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, according to the paper.
