Following a three-part investigative series into regulatory practices at the Maine Department of Environmental Protection under Commissioner Patricia Aho, a spokeswoman for Gov. Paul LePage said the governor's administration has stopped speaking to reporters at Maine Today Media's three daily papers.
The Portland Press Herald reported it learned of the new policy Tuesday after a reporter's request for the governor's public events calendar was denied. The policy covers media requests from the Press Herald and its sister publications, the Morning Sentinel and the Kennebec Journal.
Adrienne Bennett, LePage's spokeswoman, said the LePage administration plans to respond to stories produced in the paper's seven-month investigation in a column submission to the newspaper.
In a story Tuesday, Bennett told the paper the governor believes the investigation had a political agenda.
The series draws connections between Aho's history as a lobbyist representing industries for which she is now the state's top regulator.
