Governors launch new bridge task force

The governors of Maine and New Hampshire yesterday announced a new task force charged with developing a plan to replace the Memorial Bridge that connects the two states.

Maine Gov. John Baldacci and New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch signed an executive order to create the Bi-State Bridge Funding Task Force, which will be comprised of three members from each state chosen by the governors, according to Seacoast Online. By Dec. 15, the task force is expected to devise ways to jointly obtain funding and financing options and propose necessary legislation to replace the deteriorating Memorial Bridge, and rehabilitate or replace the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge. The cost of the project is estimated to be between $200 million-$300 million, and in August the New Hampshire Department of Transportation submitted a $20 million application for federal funds.

Another task force, the Maine-NH Connections Study, has been developing recommendations since 2009 and is expected to release a final report around the same time. Baldacci said the new task force formed through the executive order will allow him to present a plan to the next governor and Legislature, according to the paper.
