Governor’s office proposes $33.8M in cuts

The Governor’s Office of Policy and Management has issued a report outlining nearly $33.8 million in recommended cuts to the state budget over the next two years.

The Bangor Daily News reported the proposed cuts would include lower payments to county jails within the Department of Corrections, education cuts and a reduction of spending for the state’s Department of Health and Human Services. In total, the report outlines around $11.3 million that could be cut with legislative approval this fiscal year and $24 million in cuts for fiscal year 2015 that could be implemented by Gov. Paul LePage’s administration.

The report identifies around $9.6 million in savings that could come from reducing administrative expense payments to schools through the Essential Programs and Services payment model. The report also identifies $1.1 million in Department of Corrections savings by reducing overtime pay. For DHHS, the report identifies $3 million in possible savings from improving management of outside contracts, $1 million from cutting expenses on childhood immunizations and $1.2 million from cuts to the state’s support of municipal General Assistance programs.

In total, the report calls for the elimination of 97 state jobs, of which only 12 are currently filled.
