Grant to fund health insurance exchange

Maine is receiving $1 million to set up a new health insurance exchange required by the health care reform law to help Americans shop for health plans.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services yesterday awarded grants to 49 states and the District of Columbia to implement the exchanges by 2014 and allow consumers whose employers do not offer health insurance to buy it from a variety of providers, according to McClatchy-Tribune Information Services. The funds will be administered by the Governor's Office of Health Policy and Finance and used to design the system and potentially hire staff, the Maine Public Broadcasting Network reported.

The Affordable Care Act, made law in March, will require most Americans to have health insurance by 2014.
