Citing turbulence in federal spending, the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority has voted to cancel the Great State of Maine Air Show scheduled for this fall.
This year's show was slated to include the Navy's top fliers, the Blue Angels, but federal budget cuts due to sequestration have taken a chunk out of the Navy's funds and have grounded its prominent aerial demonstration team, starting April 1.
In a press release, MRRA said it decided to cancel the entire show because of the loss of the Navy flying team, citing a study by the International Council of Air Shows that found a major jet demonstration team is the top ticket sales draw for any air show.
Steve Levesque, MRRA's executive director, told The Times Record that the redevelopment authority is not likely to organize a show for 2014, but might put on a show every other year, in line with past scheduling of the show.
