Greater Portland Landmarks named a seasoned historic preservation specialist as its next executive director.
Sarah Hansen will start her new post on June 17, taking over from longtime director Hilary Bassett, who will retire on June 30.
The nonprofit organization said Wednesday that Hansen signs on at an "exciting and critical time," with Portland facing "unprecedented development pressure."
"We are ecstatic that Sarah will be Landmark's next leader," said Jane Batzell, chair of the search committee. "Throughout the interview process she shared an invigorating passion for preservation and community engagement that was infectious."
Hansen has worked in Washington state, Arkansas and Colorado, where she worked at the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Denver office. In 2017 she joined Maine Preservation. She serves on several boards, including Maine Downtown Center's Main Street advisory board, the economic vitality committee of the Discover Downtown Westbrook and the Maine Alliance for Smart Growth.
She started her preservation career with a summer internship at the Portland Observatory in 2000, before earning her master's degree in preservation studies from Boston University.
"I am thrilled to be joining the incredible team at Landmarks and to build on the organization's outstanding accomplishments," Hansen said. "I am a big believer in creative collaboration and I am looking forward to working with the greater Portland region to advance preservation-minded solutions to economic, environmental and community revitalization challenges."
The mission of Greater Portland Landmarks is to identify, preserve and revitalize Portland's historic buildings, neighborhoods, landscapes and parks. Founded in 1964 in response to the demolition of landmarks like Union Station, which dated to 1888, a group of residents formed Greater Portland Landmarks Inc. As urban renewal spurred further demolitions throughout the city, the nonprofit fought for historic preservation. It also manages two buildings, the Portland Observatory and Safford House.
